Black Powder, Black Magic Unleashed

Last week we began selling Black Powder, Black Magic Vol.1 with an early adopter price of only $5 for the print/pdf combo, and slowly raised the price to it’s regular $8 by the weekend. In only 3 days, we sold the entire first print run of 100 copies, and are now printing a second run to handle the backorders. The .pdf shot to #5 on RPGNow’s Hottest Titles and #2 on the Hottest Small Publisher’s Titles.

Eric Hoffman and I are overwhelmed with by the enthusiastic response to the debut issue of this zine of six-guns and sorcery. Many thanks to those who purchased it and sang of its worth.

With success must come acknowledgments, and we are thrilled to have Todd McGowan illustrating and Jim White editing. As much as I’d like to keep them both locked in a freight car for our own use, it would be a disservice to the community. Todd and Jim and excellent to work with and get results. If you really want to redline the Awesome Meter for your project, contact these guys. Both are active on Google+, but links to their websites are below:

Jim White: http://www.twwombat.com/

So what’s next?

Much of the content of Vol.2 is written, and the illustrations are already underway. With Vol.2, we’ll introduce patrons, spells, character classes, monsters, and more, so the level-o characters that survived The Devil’s Cauldron funnel in Vol.1 aren’t sitting around with nothing to do.

BPBMvol2update

The first two volumes will comprise the framework, and then with Vol.3 we’ll open the doors to submissions from the Dungeon Crawl Classics community. We hope you’ll contribute to the growth of Brimstone, the denizens of the Dark Territories, and the folklore of the Wicked West. Who will inhabit the bustling mining town of Brimstone? What adventures await in the deep mines and ancient ruins beneath it? You will help us tell these tales, and we’ve setup a form on this site to accept your proposals. We’re still working on the guidelines, and until you’ve seen Vol.2 you may not know the format, but if you want to start the conversation, feel free to send over an inquiry.

Spread the word far and wide. Share your thoughts and reviews on this site, or RPGNow.com. Through your feedback, we will continue to improve and offer the things you find most interesting.

Hold on to your hats folks. This is going to be a wild ride!

Surviving Kalmatta – A player’s guide to The Treasure Vaults of Zadabad

“We have traveled seemingly endless oceans, fought ruthless pirates, and survived storms sent by the titans. Now we look upon jungles that hide dangers too numerous to catalog. We are brothers in arms, brothers in blood, and while they journey has been long, nothing before us will sap the conviction needed to to gaze upon the Gate to Elsewhere. I cannot promise that we shall all survive to enjoy the riches and wonders locked in the black pyramid of Zadabad, but know you this, those who do shall dine with the gods.

– A speech by Captain Horatio DeMontclaire, as recorded on page 56 of his personal journal.

The free PDF of Surviving Kalmatta features the following:

  1. A player’s map of the island of Kalmatta.
  2. A player’s map of the village of Sindanore.
  3. A random table of adventure hooks to explain why your characters are on the island.
  4. The history of Sindanore, the former plague colony.
  5. Notable people of Sindanore.
  6. Common knowledge and rumors about the mysterious island.
  7. A few pages of graph/note paper.

While designed for use with The Treasure Vaults of Zadabad, the content could easily be used in your own adventures.

We hope you find it useful!

What’s in the works for Stormlord Publishing 2015

In 2014 we launched Stormlord Publishing with the release of The Well of Souls, with Prayers of the Forgotten hot on its heels. We then took many months to produce the large hexcrawl The Treasure Vaults of Zadabad. We learned a great many things, which we hope to bring to our products this year.

Eric and I have too many ideas and not enough time to get them all onto the page, but here is a rough list of what we’re developing and when they might see the light of day.

  • Surviving Kalmatta – A player’s guide for the The Treasure Vaults of Zadabad hexcrawl. This is will be a free PDF. To be released in January.
  • Black Powder, Black Magic Vol.1 – This is our pilot episode of what we hope will become a frequent product. The first volume will contain rules, occupations, fiction, and a level-0 funnel for playing with the DCCRPG in an alternate 1800’s United States. The default setting will be the bustling, opulent and ruthless mining town of Brimstone. To be released in February.
  • Fields of Ruin – A level-0 funnel. All profits from this product will be given first the Ross Family Fundraiser at FierceHope.com and The American Cancer Society. To be released in February or March.
  • Legacy of the Ancients – A follow-up to Prayers of the Forgotten, this book will detail elf legacies and dwarf heritages, plus a short adventure to introduce these rules to your players. Release TBD.
  • Black Powder, Black Magic Vol.2 – We will explore new classes, mighty deeds, spells, patrons and the factions of Brimstone in this volume. Release TBD.

Once we’ve a strong foundation for Black Powder, Black Magic, we will start accepting submissions from outside writers who wish to help us explore Brimstone and the territories around it. We will post our guidelines and pay rate for articles and fiction on this site.

Thank you to all those who supported us last year.

No more sales to EU customers. #VATMESS

I enjoy spending my free time writing new adventures and rules for use with the Dungeon Crawl Classics Roleplaying game. I also enjoy writing fiction and setting material for those products.

To a lesser extent, I enjoy doing the layout and design of these products. Fulfillment isn’t very enjoyable in itself, but getting physical products to people is worth it in the end.

What I do not want to do with my free time and money is fuss with tax laws pertaining to all 28 EU countries.

So, as much as I’d like to sell to the European Union, until the law changes, Stormlord Publishing will no longer be selling to European countries.

If you want all the details on the  VAT (value added tax), do a Google search or have a look at these links:
